Accelerated Reader (AR)
Q: What is Accelerated Reader (AR)?
A: In a nutshell, Accelerated Reader is a computer-based program with a bank of comprehension tests. Students begin by taking a test (STAR test) on the computer, which determines their reading level ‘zone.’ Students then have the opportunity to read books in their zone and take a reading comprehension quiz on the computers in their classroom or the media center. Students earn points for doing well on the test, which will in turn get them closer to the trimester AR goal. Their classroom teacher has set each student’s goal based on their reading abilities.
Q: When will my student take the STAR test and begin participating in the Accelerated Reader Program?
A: All students in grades 2nd through 6th grade will take the STAR test in the fall and participate in AR. Your student’s teacher will present the results of the test so you know which ‘zone’ your student is in and can monitor their progress toward their goal. Kindergarten and first graders will take the STAR test when they become beginning readers at their individual pace.
Q: Can my student read an Accelerated Reader book at home?
A: Yes, your student can and should be reading an AR book at home and school. Most classroom teachers expect students to read their AR book at home every night as part of their homework.
Q: Are books in Fanning’s Media Center Accelerated Reader books?
A: Many of our books are AR books, and we are always working on purchasing more books for our school and classroom libraries. This allows students the opportunity to read books from our school and classroom libraries, home, and any books borrowed from the Brea Library as well.
Q: How do I know which books are Accelerated Reader books?
A: We are working on designating an area of the library for AR books. In the meantime, students can access the Accelerated Program website at www.arbookfind.com. Click on Student and enter the title of the book. Once you find the correct book, it will show the book level and the point value.
Q: How will I know how my student is doing on his/her AR tests?
A: After your student takes the initial placement test (called the AR STAR test), your child's teacher will send home a personalized letter with your student's AR level and instructions as to how you can monitor his/her AR use from home.
Q: What if I still have more questions?
A: Please feel free to contact your student’s classroom teacher or our school Media Tech.
