With extreme heat and an Excessive Heat Advisory expected today and throughout this week, the safety and well-being of students remains our top priority.

Brea Olinda Unified School District (BOUSD) and all schools continuously monitor weather and environmental conditions, and follow the BOUSD Weather Safety Protocol for Students when making decisions about outdoor activities. School site administrators review the National Weather Service HeatRisk level, local temperature and weather conditions, air quality, and, when applicable, Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) readings for athletics. Based on these conditions, outdoor activities may be modified, relocated, postponed, or canceled.

As heat conditions increase, schools may provide additional hydration and shade, increase rest breaks, reduce the duration or intensity of activities, schedule activities during cooler periods, or move activities indoors. Students will also be closely monitored for signs of heat-related distress.

Each school will communicate any significant changes to scheduled activities, athletic events, or other circumstances to parents/guardians when notification is appropriate.

Families can help by encouraging students to drink plenty of water, wear appropriate clothing, and communicate with an adult if they are feeling overheated, dizzy, short of breath, or otherwise unwell.

Tips to Stay Safe During Extreme Heat

  • Drink plenty of water, and don't wait until thirsty.

  • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing

  • Avoid unnecessary sun exposure. When in the sun, wear a hat with a wide brim and use sunscreen.

  • Avoid strenuous activities when outside or in non-air conditioned buildings. When working outdoors, take frequent rest and refreshment breaks in shaded areas.

  • Never leave children, elderly people or pets unattended in closed cars or other vehicles.

  • Try to stay cool indoors. Shopping malls, libraries and public facilities are great places to visit to stay cool. Many cities also offer Cooling Centers within their Community Centers.
